The British Red Cross delegate register consists of skilled, experienced personnel or “delegates” who are available to work overseas on a fixed-term, salaried basis. Delegates are seconded to work for the Federation, ICRC or directly for British Red Cross in the field when suitable positions arise. Please note only UK residents and/or British nationals can apply for the delegate register.
We tend to recruit the following professions to the delegate register:
- Logisticians
- Water and Sanitation delegates
- Construction/Shelter delegates
- Organisational Development delegates
- Reporting delegates
- Relief delegates
- Disaster management delegates
- Livelihood/Food Security delegates
- Health delegates
- Doctors (public health)
- HR delegates
- Communications delegates
- Information delegates
- Finance delegates
- Project/Programme managers
- Arabic speaking delegates (Protection/detention delegates) to work with the ICRC*
*Please note that Arabic and English are required for these roles.
Different types of delegates are required to have different skills, however, certain requirements are essential for all potential delegates:
- They must be adaptable, flexible and have sound judgment.
- They should possess initiative, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and have the ability to live and work in a team, usually under arduous and sometimes dangerous conditions.
- Sound mental and physical health is essential.
- Supervision and training of local staff is an integral part of most assignments. All personnel must be computer literate.
- They must fully accept the Red Cross’ Fundamental Principles and be prepared to acquire an understanding of the Movement and its ideals.
- Knowledge of foreign languages is always useful and encouraged
Contracts range from one month to 2 years plus in length depending on the role. Delegates can also be accompanied depending on the position, country and length of contract.
If you do not fit the profile for the above roles you can browse for opportunities directly on the ICRC and Federation websites ( www.icrc.org and www.ifrc.org).
