The British Red Cross delegate register consists of skilled, experienced personnel or “delegates” who are available to work overseas on a fixed-term, salaried basis.  Delegates are seconded to work for the Federation, ICRC or directly for British Red Cross in the field when suitable positions arise.  Please note only UK residents and/or British nationals can apply for the delegate register.



Register to be a delegate

We tend to recruit the following professions to the delegate register:
  • Logisticians
  • Water and Sanitation delegates
  • Construction/Shelter delegates
  • Organisational Development delegates
  • Reporting delegates
  • Relief delegates
  • Disaster management delegates
  • Livelihood/Food Security delegates
  • Health delegates
  • Doctors (public health)
  • HR delegates
  • Communications delegates
  • Information delegates
  • Finance delegates
  • Project/Programme managers
  • Arabic speaking delegates (Protection/detention delegates) to work with the ICRC*

*Please note that Arabic and English are required for these roles.

Different types of delegates are required to have different skills, however, certain requirements are essential for all potential delegates:

  • They must be adaptable, flexible and have sound judgment.
  • They should possess initiative, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and have the ability to live and work in a team, usually under arduous and sometimes dangerous conditions.
  • Sound mental and physical health is essential.
  • Supervision and training of local staff is an integral part of most assignments. All personnel must be computer literate.
  • They must fully accept the Red Cross’ Fundamental Principles and be prepared to acquire an understanding of the Movement and its ideals.
  • Knowledge of foreign languages is always useful and encouraged
Contracts range from one month to 2 years plus in length depending on the role. Delegates can also be accompanied depending on the position, country and length of contract.
